Plant of the Month - Winterberry Holly

Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata) is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub consisting of both male and female plants. The desirable, fruit-bearing female plants require a male in close proximity to ensure adequate pollination by insects. The fruiting display begins in September and October, with the most dazzling colors becoming apparent in November, when the foliage begins to drop. Clustered along the upper ends of branches, berries are primarily red, though yellow and orange-red varieties are available. Winterberry is Ohio's only native holly.
